Myra, Wear Your Walking Shoes.....

Hello Friends!

 



I hope that you had a great week. How was your Halloween? Mine was quiet. I worked 6 to 10 at my second job so that the other employees could go trick or treating with their kids. It was a quiet night.
Friday we had rain like much of the east coast. It brought down a lot of leaves. Rich and I went to the movies and saw Prisoners. It was a very dark movie with a great cast.

     When I got up this morning the rain had stopped but it was still very foggy. Fortunately  it burned off quickly because I had plans to meet  Myra. We had planned to get together for lunch and I always try to find a new place to explore and while looking at the upcoming North Carolina events( I get an email weekly) I found this....

 Myra did not know what she was in for.... An as we saw our first sign she let me know that she didn't really care for Persimmon Pudding but her DH loves the stuff. See a recipe for NC persimmon pudding here.  You can also read more bout the festival here.

 

 We had to park a couple of miles down the road and ride to the farm in this hay wagon.

Here is the farm. This house was built between 1780 and 1810. The original homestead is one of the buildings on the left that was converted to storage and still survives as one of the dependencies. That dates to probably the 1760's to 1770's. The farm house served as tavern/inn and was positioned on the wagon road that lead down to Asheboro. We heard from a couple of people that Cornwallis and the British came through during the Revolutionary war around the time of the Battle of Guilford Courthouse.

There was music. There were lots of booths to explore, booths about the history of Colfax, about persimmons, and wares from local vendors. there was a path down to visit this tree. The tree is one of the oldest in Guilford County. There are no old growth forests in are area and Rich and I never see any trees this size out on our hikes. I thought if I hugged the tree you could see how big he is :)

I didn't know that persimmons were available in the US until I moved to North Carolina. I don't remember ever taking notice of them. When I lived in Japan I was introduced to the Asian persimmons which are about the size of a medium tomato. American persimmons are much smaller.

 



 

Myra and I came home with some persimmon jelly. This was surprising and I think that Myra is baking some biscuits to have with the jelly. We also came home with some pudding. This is one of those old time desserts that remind me of fall. It reminds me of Indian pudding too.

 After we left the festival Myra and I had a nice lunch at a small Greek restaurant in High Point. She totally spoiled me since my birthday is this upcoming week. I am going to take some picks of the sweet things she surprised me with tomorrow when the light is good.
